What happens to the sorties allocated to CAS if the air unit is out of range of any CAS orbit (since they won’t be plannable)?

They are put on alert. This may not help much, since (a) if it’s out of range during planning, it will still be out of range during execution (unless the orbit or squadron location has moved), and (b) alert CAS is probably going to be less responsive to FSRs. This is something users should look for, and consider alternative options for a squadron out of range of its orbit. [Note: In low resolution CAS, the AR anchor is collocated with the orbit; high resolution CAS was designed to allow for refueling at an anchor enroute to the orbit.]
