  * Doug's machine would not boot.
  * Got https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10
  * created a bootable usb.
  * booted it and navigated to command line.
  * then executed 
    * bootrec /fixmbr, 
    * bootrec /fixboot (refused permission), 
    * bootrec /scanos, 
    * and bootrec /rebuildbcd to repair the MBR and all was ok.
